Today, the League of American Bicyclists has awarded 100 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Businesses in 31 states and Washington, D.C. With this announcement, the program has grown to include 1,050 visionary local businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies from across the country that are changing the script on what it means to provide a top-notch experience and atmosphere for employees and customers alike. There are now BFBs in 47 states and DC.

Mark your calendars: The 2016 National Bike Summit will be held in Washington, D.C., from March 7 to 9. The 16th annual gathering of bike advocates, industry leaders and congressional champions will again take place at the Renaissance Hotel in Downtown Washington, D.C. The premier advocacy event of the year, the National Bike Summit unites the voices of bicyclists on Capitol Hill. The Summit has shown it’s real impact, leveraging increased investments in bicycling at the federal, state and local levels.

Yesterday, we heard how Bike Easy and NOLA Women on Bikes, mini-grant recipients, were able to boost their efforts through their Youth Spokeswomen Mentorship Program. Marin Tockman, of NOLA Women on Bikes, and Virginia Brisley, of Bike Easy, presented a Women Bike webinar on their successful program, providing tips on how you can replicate this program in your community.

The League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our friend and colleague, Deb Hubsmith. Hubsmith was the founder of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and served as its director for 9 years. She dedicated her career to bicycling and walking advocacy at the local, state and national levels. She began her advocacy as the founding executive director of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition, where she helped develop the county’s Safe Routes to School pilot program. She championed the nation’s first statewide Safe Routes to School program in California and also a nationwide program, which passed the U.S. Congress and resulted in more than $1 billion for Safe Routes to School programs across the country.

The League of American Bicyclists, a Washington DC-based advocacy organization representing the interests of the nation’s 57 million cyclists, is seeking an intern to assist with the Bicycle Friendly America and membership programs. Each year, through its Bicycle Friendly America program, the League evaluates hundreds of applications from across the country, and designates Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly States, Communities, Businesses, and Universities.
