Last year, we awarded $3,000 in mini-grants to support new and growing programs that engage young women in bicycling. Next week, we’ll hear how Bike Easy and NOLA Women on Bikes, mini-grant recipients, were able to boost their efforts through their Youth Spokeswomen Mentorship Program. Marin Tockman, of NOLA Women on Bikes, and Virginia Brisley, of Bike Easy, will discuss their partnership in-depth via a webinar on Thursday, August 20, at noon eastern / 1 p.m. central.

The League of American Bicyclists, a Washington DC-based advocacy organization representing the interests of the nation’s 57 million cyclists, is seeking an intern to assist with the Bicycle Friendly America and membership programs. Each year, through its Bicycle Friendly America program, the League evaluates hundreds of applications from across the country, and designates Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly States, Communities, Businesses, and Universities.

On its maiden voyage, the Taco Bike in Nashville caused quite the scene. Cayla Mackey managed to pull the 200 lb trailer up one of Music City’s steepest hills while, coincidentally, her mom and sister drove past. They couldn’t help but laugh at the sight, Mackey said. “They drove past me laughing, and I screamed ‘I’m doing it! I’m doing it!’ ” Mackey said.

Every year we make recommendations that states improve laws for bicyclists. In 2015, we recommended that 22 states adopt a 3 foot or greater safe passing law and 30 states adopt a vulnerable road user law. In the last decade these types of laws have proliferated, with 15 states adopting new safe passing laws and 8 states adopting vulnerable road user laws since 2008. To help states achieve these recommendations I am happy to announce three new or updated model laws that states and communities can use to craft legislation that supports the safety of bicyclists.

The Senate passed the DRIVE Act, a comprehensive transportation bill with at least three years of funding, after a week of deliberation. The bill was more divisive than we’ve seen in transportation in the past, mostly over funding but its also the first long term bill in a decade. Taking a broad view, it missing any real innovation or vision to really grapple with transportation needs of this 21st Century. However, there were a number of improvements in the new bill- including increase of funding for the Transportation Alternatives Program, and two new complete streets provisions.
