Summer (Bike) Fun: Bike to the Movies!

Why should cars have all the fun? That’s what the organizers of downtown Denver’s Bike-In Movie series were thinking when they created the initiative in 2011. Bike-In movie nights are cropping up in communities all across the country, especially during the warm summer months. Denver’s is just one of many that already exist. The Bike-In Movie series was an outflow of the Civic Center Conservancy’s mission: to activate previously underused public space and steward the city’s historic Civic Center Park. The nonprofit wanted to give Denverites another reason to visit the park and spend time in the historic area. Bikes? Why not!

Bikes + Baseball = A strong partnership? More and more Major League Baseball stadiums are catching wind of the growing number of baseball fans riding their bicycles to games. From San Francisco to Chicago to Washington, D.C., baseball franchise leaders are recognizing the benefits of bicycling for their fans and their local communities. The stadiums for the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and Washington, D.C.’s Nationals all provide free, secure bike valet during all games. The San Diego Padres offer free bike valet for Sunday games.

Each summer, kids flock to the Community Cycling Center’s shop with their bikes, imaginations, and goals to expand their geographic and personal horizons. Our Bike Camp program teaches safety, group riding technique, right of way, and basic, hands-on maintenance skills. But the biggest lesson is the empowerment kids receive from a summer adventure on two wheels.

Senate To Begin Debate on Transportation Bill

The U.S. Senate will now begin debating its proposed three-year transportation bill, after voting 62-36 on Wednesday to clear the way for discussion on the floor. If approved, it would be the first mutli-year transportation bill in a decade. So what could this mean for bicycling on the federal level? It’s a 1,000 page bill, so we’re still digesting it, but here are a few things we know right now.
