Trips for Kids

Trips for Kids is a national network of organizations committed to the universal power of the bike to build healthy bodies and minds, healthy communities, and a healthy planet. The bicycle can transform young lives, and since its inception in 1988 Trips for Kids has recognize the importance of ensuring all children have the opportunity to realize the benefits of biking. With the historic lack of access to bikes, trails, and cycling programs in underserved communities, Trips for Kids organizations provide opportunities for young people to learn and grow through cycling.

Guiding Principles

Healthy Kids

All kids should have access to activities that improve mental, emotional, social and physical health regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, ability or zip code. Children who are exposed early on to the joy of cycling, the freedom to explore, and nature-based outdoor experiences develop lifelong healthy habits.

Healthy Communities

Underserved populations have traditionally been excluded from the cycling community due to economic, cultural, and physical barriers. Bikes are the great equalizer that create social and economic connections and inspire healthy communities.

Healthy Planet

The bicycle is the ideal vehicle from which young riders can learn lessons in environmental awareness, stewardship and sustainability. Kids develop a connection to the natural world from the seat of a bike by moving through the world on their own power and simply having fun.

Through the leadership of its independent chapters across North America, Trips for Kids has reached more than 230,000 kids over the course of its history. In 2023, the League took on the role of supporting the national network of organizations and working to grow the reach of Trips for Kids programming which includes resources and guidance on promoting healthy lifestyles and environmental awareness through a Ride program, a bike-related STEM learning Earn-A Bike- curriculum, and more.

The League of American Bicyclists is thrilled to continue to make these Trips for Kids programming materials available for bicycling advocacy organizations and clubs who want to do youth outreach and engagement. Below is a list of Trips for Kids chapters to connect with and support.
