The Life and Legacy of Marshall “Major” Taylor: Join our webinar and take action to honor his achievements
Major Taylor was the first superstar of cycling. He was known as the fastest man on a bike and was a global phenomenon at a time when telegrams were the height of technology.
Yet, because he was Black, Major Taylor faced prejudice and racism from the bicycling community, including the League of the time, as he pursued track records and world championships.
Today, his legacy is unknown by many. We can take actions to change that.
Representatives Jonathan L. Jackson and Jim Baird have introduced a bill to award Marshall “Major” Taylor with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor Congress can bestow.
Tune in to our recent webinar to learn more about why we should remember and honor Major Taylor’s remarkable achievements, featuring:
- Michael Kranish, investigative journalist and author of The World’s Fastest Man: The Extraordinary Life of Cyclist Major Taylor, America’s First Black Sports Hero
- Bill Gaston, founder of the Major Taylor International Cycling Alliance
You can support this effort to honor Major Taylor by emailing your representative and asking them to co-sponsor HR 6672, a bill “in recognition of his significance to the nation as an athlete, trailblazer, role model, and equal rights advocate.”
Please join us in bestowing the much-deserved and belated recognition on a trailblazing athlete and cyclist.
