Across the country, individual leaders and bicycling organizations are prioritizing getting more women on bikes — and many are starting the conversation with a gathering of new and long-time riders. To help make these events as successful as possible, we created our latest guide: How to Host a Women’s Bicycling Forum.
In less than two years, our Women Bike initiative has grown at a rapid pace and evolved into one of the most visible and exciting programs at the League. To carry this momentum forward, we’re seeking a national leader to serve as the program’s first full-time staffer.
UPDATE: The anti-bike amendment to the state’s transportation bill was defeated on the house of the Missouri floor on Tuesday afternoon. More from the MoBikeFed here. Bicycling is under attack in Missouri’s State House of Representatives, and the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation has launched a campaign to beat back the anti-bike bill.
Are you working on a campaign or project aimed at getting more women or girls on bikes? The League’s Women Bike Mini-Grant program has opened an application for $3,000 in funding for projects or campaigns that can provide best practices on women’s bicycling outreach and engagement for advocates and leaders nationwide. UPDATED: An amendment offered by Senator Chuck Schumer of New York to make bikeshare membership eligible for federal commuter tax benefits, passed in the Senate Finance Committee today. This is an important first step to recognizing bikeshare as a commuter option. What would this amendment do?

The September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance has a bold vision: Construct a 1,000-mile bike trail that links the sites and national memorials of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The League was honored to host the Alliance’s board and committee members for their board meeting on Friday.
We are off to an exciting warm-up period with the new-and-improved National Bike Challenge! We have been working diligently to improve the website and offer our users an intuitive, functional and inspiring website ahead of our May 1 start. As our current user base knows, it’s been a work in progress and we thank you for your patience. Twitter is useful for fueling engagement with your supporters and getting the word out about your issues. But it can also be a helpful tool in another communications arena: media relations. On a recent webinar with the League of American Bicyclists, we shared tips on how biking and walking advocates can use Twitter to connect with reporters and get active transportation issue in the news.
