Challenge Profile: Carl Morrison

Carl Morrison is a pro at accomplishing his goals. The 55-year-old set a high bar this summer, promising himself he’d ride 5,000 miles on his bike. To date, he’s already gone more than 10,000! An avid runner, Morrison turned to bicycling after advice from his doctor’s about the wear and tear to his knees. The Surgeon Bay, WI-resident is putting up high numbers for the National Bike Challenge. We caught up with him to talk about blowing past his big goals.

ACS: Bike Commuting Continues to Rise

UPDATED: We’ve updated our data list for the 70 largest U.S. cities, including share of bicycle commuters and percent change. Download it here. According to the ACS, in 2012 about .64% of commutes are made by bicycle, which represents an almost 10% increase from 2011. This is the largest year-on-year increase since 2007-2008, showing that people are choosing to use their bicycles for transportation not just in response to economic crisis, but because bicycles are leading the way to recovery.

CLE VS. PGH: Neck and Neck in Final NBC Stretch

The battle for the Rust Crown is down to the wire. Rust Belt rivals Pittsburgh and Cleveland are neck and neck as the National Bike Challenge winds to a close. The cities’ have channeled their bitter rivalry into the Challenge, squaring off in the Rust Belt Battle of the Bikes. With just a little over a week left in the Challenge, Cleveland is winning in mileage with a little more than 617,000, but Pittsburgh still leads in total points — which is the deciding factor.
