America needs SAFE Streets
We love biking because it brings us joy, because it’s healthy, because it helps us avoid traffic, because of so many reasons. But we think bicycling could be better–and we know it could be safer.
In our 2018 Benchmarking Report and again while testifying on Capitol Hill, the League highlighted the public health crisis happening on our roads: nearly 1 in every 5 people who die in crashes with motor vehicles was biking, walking, or using a mobility device like a wheelchair.
Despite comprising 18% of traffic fatalities, states report spending less than 1% of their federal safety funds on improving safety outcomes for pedestrians and bicyclists.
This needs to change. Spending on safety should match the level of danger people biking and walking face on our streets.
Ask your Member of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 3040, the SAFE Streets Act, which would target funding towards safety improvements in areas where the lives of people who bike and walk are most in danger.
Take Action
