League Delivers Your Message to Capitol Hill
- In front of the office of the Honorable Ron Wyden, Senator from Oregon
On Tuesday myself and Walter Finch made the trek up to Capitol Hill to deliver hundreds of postcards to 95 Senate offices. The postcards were part of a recent League campaign where we provided postcards to our members to write a personal message to their senators. Once returned to our Washington office, they were sorted and hand delivery to Capitol Hill. Though the offices and notes were many, the message was the same: urge the Senate to keep school routes safe for kids on bikes by incorporating bicycling into the national transportation policy.
It was great to open the mail day after day and see the stacks of notes piling up! Here is a photo of the day I sorted out the mail by senate office:
As you can see, some states we better represented than others (California, Pennsylvania and Virginia among the better), but we had letters sent in from as far away as Hawaii and Alaska!
This personal appeal to the highest office in the country is one of the things that makes the League a great asset to the people; not only do we lobby on the behalf of bicyclists for the promotion of bicycling, but we allow bicyclists to do the lobbying themselves. Thank you to everyone who sent in their postcards for us to deliver, and for those who sent them in themselves!
