Help Improve Driver Education in New Jersey
The New Jersey Bike and Walk Coalition is working to improve driver education in New Jersey. Senate Bill 2894 would require that bicyclist and pedestrian safety information included in: The New Jersey Driver Education Course, The New Jersey Driver Education Manual, and The New Jersey Driver’s License Written Exam.
By requiring the driver’s license exam to include questions about bicyclist and pedestrian safety, this bill would improve the state’s Bicycle Friendly State score. In our recent rankings, which ranked New Jersey #9 overall based upon relatively strong planning and complete streets policies at the state level, the state received only 5 points out of a potential 20 for Driver Education Requirements.
A bill similar to Senate Bill 2894 has been approved by the New Jersey Assembly. Senate Bill 2894 was unanimously passed by the Senate Transportation Committee earlier this year. To reach the floor and be voted on it must be passed by the Senate Budget Committee during the current legislative session.
If you are a citizen of New Jersey, please take action and tell Senator Paul Sarlo that Senate Bill 2894 deserves a vote!
