Get Moving: Women & Bicycles Toolkit
So how do we spread women bicycling initiatives to communities all across the country?
In 2013, the League was proud to support the Washington Area Bicyclist Association’s innovative Women & Bicycles initiative. Over the course of a year, the organization created and implemented a full-scale, multi-faceted campaign to increase the number of women riding in the DC area. Yesterday, Nelle Pierson, the program creator and the organization’s Outreach Manager, shared the details of the program, challenges they faced and a step-by-step toolkit to help you launch a women’s bicycling initiative in your community in one of our Women Bike webinars.

The webinar served as a sneak peak of WABA’s new Women and Bicycle’s Toolkit, which is a how-to guide on building a women’s bicycling initative in your community. Download it here.
Pierson shared a lot of great insight on what it was like to create, launch and build a women’s bicycling initiative from the ground up. We fielded a lot of great questions, and I promised to post some additional resources for further discussion:
- WABA’s Women & Bicycles Workbook, which has been a great tool for the program so far and serves as a primer on bicycling in the city.
- League’s Women Bike “Women on a Roll” report, which includes more than 100 sources of data showcasing the potential of women bicyclists.
- The League has an education program that includes curriculum information, instructional videos and general tips. The League also certifies League Cycling Instructors.
- The League also offers an insurance program for all member organizations. Details here.
A big thank you to Nelle and WABA for sharing their wisdom on yesterday’s webinar, and stay tuned for some exciting Women Bike updates in the next week!
