New: Census Data on Bike Commuting

Today, nearly 2,000 schools participated in National Bike To School Day, with parents and kids hopping on two wheels for their daily commute to school. We asked our followers to Tweet and Instagram your favorite photos from this morning, using the hashtag #BTSD. Here in the nation’s capital, we’re lucky to have a passionate and skilled leader behind the local chapter of Kidical Mass. Megan Odett, who serves as the member services coordinator for the Alliance for Biking & Walking, not only arrives to the office on her Yuba after making a school run herself, but is also a master organizer of events like the ABCs of Family Biking on the weekend. In honor of Bike to School Day, she caught up with a local biking dad, Charles Greene III, to get his take on riding with his daughter.

UPDATE: Bike Funding Cut from TIGER

The next round of federal TIGER grants may EXCLUDE walking and bicycling. This morning, the Transportation sub-committee of the powerful House Appropriations Committee debated proposed funding for the Department of Transportation in 2015 — and voted to disallow any funding for bike and pedestrian projects as part of TIGER grants.

Every year the Bicycle Friendly State ranking collects information and grades states on the laws that govern bicyclists and motorists. Many of the questions in this category are on basic laws and states tend to do well on those basic questions. These questions allow us to provide up-to-date information on state laws throughout the nation. We also try to recognize trends in laws due to local advocacy and reward states that are pushing the envelope when it comes to providing legal protection for cyclists.
