Bike/Ped Projects Win Big in Latest TIGER Grant Announcement

The moment many transportation watchers have been waiting for arrived today as the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the recipients of $474 million in the fifth round of federal TIGER grants. See the list of recipients here

Among the notable winners for bicycling and walking are a 2.5 mile expansion of Atlanta’s Beltline Corridor Trail; a regional pedestrian infrastructure project in Foley, AL; a complete streets project in Olean, NY; a multiuse trail connecting Missoula and Lolo, Montana; and a Complete Streets project in Lee County, FL.

Selected projects are meant to enhance livability by connecting housing and jobs, and improving sustainability and economic development. USDOT Secretary Anthony Foxx spoke in Lee County, FL, this afternoon.

“As Congress starts to think about the 2014 transportation bill, the overwhelming success of the TIGER program surely points the way forward,” said Andy Clarke, League President. “As a former Mayor, Secretary Foxx understands the value of this program that gets funds directly – and quickly – into the hands of local agencies to solve transportation problems with a genuinely multi-modal approach. People want transportation options, and local elected officials know best how to deliver them.”

Local groups heralded today’s announcement, as well.

“This is a watershed moment for BikeWalkLee and the citizens of Lee County,” Darla Letourneau, of the advocacy group BikeWalkLee, said about the County’s Complete Streets project award. “It puts on a new path toward a livable, sustainable, and economically vibrant future. It could not have been possible without real public engagement, collaboration, and teamwork. That process really pays off.”

Past rounds of TIGER have funded several stand alone bicycling and walking projects and a large number of successful projects include bicycling and walking components.
