New Bike Advocacy Training Workshop Following the National Bike Summit

The League of American Bicyclists’ mission is to build a Bicycle Friendly America for Everyone, improving lives and strengthening communities through bicycling. Our successes to date are thanks in part to the growing bike movement, a network of changemakers leading at the national, state, and local levels. To achieve even more wins for better biking that benefit everyone, we must continue to grow this movement by empowering more people to be capable, confident leaders and advocates in their communities.

To make this a reality, the League is thrilled to announce that we are launching a new bike advocacy training where people like you can become League-certified bicycling advocates.

In this new training’s first year, the League will host two workshops, once in Washington, DC, following the National Bike Summit in March and again in August in a different location that has yet to be determined.

Who should attend?

These advocacy training workshops are open to anyone, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. The workshop is geared toward emerging leaders, advocates newly entering the bike movement, seasoned advocates interested in brushing up on their skills, and anyone else interested in gaining League certification as a bike advocate.

Workshop Content & Format

The workshop will be in-person and conducted over three days. The first day consists of an evening happy hour and group ride, the second day includes a full day of training, and the third day wraps up with a half day of training.

The workshop will cover advocacy basics such as the history of bike advocacy, how to get organized, effective political engagement, strategy, tactics and making the case, coalition building, policy basics, funding, storytelling, equity and mobility justice, and more.

The content of the workshop will involve group work, happy hours, group bike rides, as well as individual self-guided readings which will be given to all participants ahead of the workshop.

By the end of the workshop and accompanying readings, our goal is to have proficient advocates who can take their training home to implement the ideas, strategies, and practical applications in their communities and feel empowered to build their bike movement at the local level.

Cost

The cost of the workshop in 2024 is $100 which includes meals, certification, bike share ride rentals during the workshop, and all materials associated with the workshop. There will be a limited number of partial scholarships available. Email [email protected] to learn more.

Registration/Requirements

Registration for the first workshop in DC will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. There will be a cap of 35 participants and we will have a waitlist. All registrants must be current individual League members. Join or check your membership status here.
