Challenge: A Year of Transformation

This story comes to us from Randy LeBlanc, who is quickly rising up the leaderboard in the National Bike Challenge. But it’s been a year of transformation for Randy, who was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in March. Here’s more from this Platinum-level rider.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in March of 2013 with a blood glucose reading of 392.

At the time I weighed 324 lbs, actually down from 333 just 2 months prior. I immediately began to take my health very seriously from that point forward. I started a strict diet program, which mostly consists of cutting out all processed foods, sugars, starches and unnecessary carbs. My exercise program started out with walking, mild weight training, including pushups, sit-ups, & dumbbell curls and, most of all, cycling.

As of June 2014, I have lost 104 lbs and am now in what may be the best shape of my life, and am averaging well over 700 miles/month on my bike, having done 1,032 miles in May as a part of the National Bike Challenge. My blood glucose levels have been back in the normal range for just about a year now as of June 2014.  I started out on a big box mountain bike, which I promptly wore out then upgraded components. I then purchased a road bike, joined my cycling club and began training for and riding a host of charity rides including the Texas MS150 from Houston to Austin — 175 miles.

My next big ride will be a century ride for the American Diabetes Association in the Houston Tour De Cure! In the meantime, to help stay in cycling shape, I have bought a nice commuter hybrid and am now cycling to work, 30 miles / day.

I hope to serve as an example that obesity and diabetes are beatable — and as long as I’m riding my bike, neither of them can catch me!
