You Did It! 10,000 for Safety Goal
Thank you to the more than 10,000 of you who submitted comments to the Federal Highway Administration asking them to institute a non-motorized safety performance measure. As of this publication, there have been 10,815 comments submitted.
We made quite a showing and FHWA has acknowledged that the overwhelming response and their need to respond to it. (Just for comparison: The open Federal Register notice for comments on whether we should be able to make cell phone calls during flights has just 3,000 comments — and that’s been on national news and is being pushed by a lot of powerful interest groups!)
It isn’t just FHWA that is watching. Members of Congress are paying close attention, too. In the last few months, three separate Congressional committees in the House and the Senate have called on FHWA to create a bicycle and pedestrian safety measure — and specifically referenced the comments on the website in those discussions.
Today is the last day to submit comments, and the next step will be for FHWA to respond to the mountain of comments they received on this rule. We will continue to work with FHWA and Congress to ensure that the measures they use for measuring and increasing bicycle and pedestrian safety are meaningful and useful at the local, state and federal levels. If you haven’t yet submitted a comment of your own, click here to register your support for this important safety measure!
Thank you for taking the time to support this important campaign!
