Women Lead In Innovative Advocacy
A few weeks ago, I was meeting friends for Happy Hour and, as I pulled up on my bike, they were already engrossed in conversation.
“Hey,” my friend shouted as I was locking up a few feet away, “What’s your dream job?”
I paused for a second and responded: “Honestly, I think I have it.”
Whether it’s looking out at hundreds of fired-up participants at the National Women’s Bicycling Forum or just talking, one-on-one, with a local women’s cycling advocate, working on Women Bike here at the League is a daily inspiration. It’s truly a privilege to work with so many amazing women across the nation who are leading the movement in new directions.
So, I couldn’t have been more excited to see the October issue of Bicycling magazine include a story on “Eight innovators who are flush with new ideas about how bicycles can change the world.” And wasn’t at all surprised that 6 of the profiles were women, including:
- Liz Jose of WE Bike NYC
- Kristin Gavin of Gearing Up
- April Economides of Alta Planning + Design
- Veronica Davis and Najeema Davis Washington of Black Women Bike DC and
- Helen Ho from Recycle-a-Bicycle.
Now, the online edition is up, expanding the list to 14 innovators — and more women made the cut, including Melody Moody of Bike Walk Mississippi, Nelle Pierson of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, and the Women Bike program itself!
