Webinar: Growing Allies Thru Women’s Leadership
Last year, we awarded $3,000 in mini-grants to support new and growing programs that engage young women in bicycling.
Next week, we’ll hear how the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) and Multicultural Communities for Mobility (MCM), mini-grant recipients, were able to boost their efforts through their pilot program aimed at growing allies for the bicycle and pedestrian movement through women’s leadership. Daniella Alcedo, of the Pomona Valley Bicycle Coalition chapter of LACBC, and Maria Sipin, of MCM, will discuss their partnership in-depth via a webinar on Thursday, October 1, at 2 p.m. eastern / 11 a.m. pacific. Register today.
The goal of the joint program is to increase women’s capacity to become community leaders by giving them a basic understanding of public policy; the relationship between biking, health, family and community; and the importance of coalitions for providing the support needed to do this work.
“Women Bike, Women Lead was an opportunity to strengthen our growing bike community by building new relationships and strengthening existing ones,” said Sipin. “We were able to facilitate some challenging conversations about gender, participation in advocacy, and issues we had to overcome as individuals and groups.”
She continued: “Personally, I reflected on my abilities as a leader. Women Bike, Women Lead is part of many great things unfolding in Los Angeles, especially between two organizations such as Multicultural Communities for Mobility and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. When two key players can come together and generate new ideas and invite others to be a part of our work, this is a sign we’re moving things in the right direction.”
Alcedo emphasized the unifying power of bicycling.
“The idea behind WBWL was to show women and women-identified individuals that there is so much work out there that needs to be done and with the right support, anyone can create a positive change in their community,” she said. “For me, WBWL was an opportunity to provide interested individuals the resources and tools they need to create some something great in their community through the vehicle that binds us all: the bicycle.”
