As we prepare for the 2014 National Bike Summit, we’ve reached out to our generous sponsors to ask: What speaks to you about bicycling? What excites you about the Summit? Here, we hear from Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York.

For me, bicycling has always been synonymous with freedom. When I was a kid, my bike gave me the autonomy to explore the world on my own terms, to discover new corners of the neighborhood, to occasionally get lost and feel the thrill of finding my way home. When I got back in the saddle a few years ago, I realized that though the bike was bigger and the neighborhood had become New York City, very little had changed: every time I go for a ride, I feel like a kid again—liberated to get lost and like it.

What really excites me about the National Bike Summit is the opportunity to spend time with people who share my passion for riding and my vision for a more bike-friendly nation. The Summit is a place for cyclists from around the country to come together, talk shop, share stories, and encourage one another. It’s necessary, invigorating, and empowering.
