Report: State Bike Summit Guide
Hopefully by now you’ve heard about the 2014 National Bike Summit in March. (Register here.) Every year hundreds of advocates come to Washington, DC, to lobby Congress and share best practices with other advocates. What you may not know is that each year at least 27 states hold statewide bike and/or walking summits or conferences.
These events bring together advocates and the region’s other key players to focus on the needs of the individual state, and they can be a critical part of moving a state’s bicycling and walking agenda forward.
To help advocates launch or continue state bike summits, we’ve updated our step-by-step guide. It is full of useful, real world recommendations and includes tools like a sample timelines, press releases, and media guidelines. It also shares the experience of advocates who’ve already done it.
Here is some of what’s inside:
- LOGISTICS
- SESSIONS AND POLICY ASKS
- COMMUNICATIONS
- INSIGHTS FROM ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS
- SAMPLE TIMELINE
- SAMPLE PRESS RELEASES
- SAMPLE MEDIA GUIDELINES
In addition, the Alliance for Biking & Walking has a number of other resources on how to plan and prepare for your very own state bike/walk summit here.
We hope this guide helps you supercharge advocacy in your state. If you are planning a state summit, we’d love to know about it. Let Liz know at [email protected].
