New Resource: Introducing The Bicycle Friendly Community Ideabook

Have you ever wondered what trail network wayfinding signage looks like in a highly-rated Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC)? Or how places that have earned a BFC award are engaging more women to bike? Or would an example of a local bike parking policy help you make the case for one in your own community? Our new BFC Ideabook is filled with big ideas to inspire you sourced from communities nationwide.

In December, the League is releasing the Bicycle Friendly Community Ideabook, a free publication that aims to inspire local advocates and decision-makers by uplifting projects, partnerships, and policies used by peer communities in their efforts to better support people riding bikes.

The BFC Ideabook is full of detailed case studies, stories, and resources we’ve seen over the last several years in Bicycle Friendly Communities. There are over 500 BFCs of all population sizes, diverse demographics, varying climates, and latitudes and longitudes, enabling readers to find inspiration from communities as similar or different from their own. Along with the publication, you’ll also have the chance to explore an interactive online Ideabook map — complete with filters to help you find examples that match your criteria.

One of the many case studies highlighted in the Ideabook includes the success story of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Featured in our most recent edition of the American Bicyclist magazine, Tulsa is a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community home to Bike Club — a group that serves over two dozen elementary and middle schools across Tulsa with bike-centered educational activities. Since the program launched in 2014, more than 2,400 elementary and middle school students have participated.

12/7 Update: Want to learn more about Bike Club and other success stories across the nation? Watch the recording of our one-hour webinar on Wednesday, December 6th, to preview the BFC Ideabook, take a tour of the beautiful publication and accompanying interactive map, and dive deep into how Bike Club is making waves for new generations of riders in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
