Guest Post: Amtrak — Let’s Get Rolling!

Early this week, Adventure Cycling Association, the League of American Bicyclists and the Alliance for Biking and Walking wrote Amtrak president, Joseph H. Boardman a letter supporting increased bicycle services on the Adirondack and Ethan Allen Lines in New York and Vermont. This letter is a direct result of the press conference held by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and New York State Sens. Betty Little and Brad Hoylman and supports local efforts by the New York Bicycle Coalition (NYBC).

Safe Streets Bill Gets Rolling

Its been a great week for complete streets! On Wednesday, Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) suggested that Congress should encourage Complete Streets to ensure cost-effective use of transportation dollars to lower the stress on the Highway Trust fund. Join the League in supporting an equitable and accessible transportation system for all. The Americans with Disabilities Act turns 23 on July 26th. In celebration of the anniversary, the League is supporting the National Disability Rights Network campaign to push Amtrak to meet ADA guidelines to create safe and complete stations.

Foxx Offers Positive But Vague Support for Bike Projects

The good news: His answers were positive. The bad news: The answers are so vague — especially the one on performance measures — it tells me we have a lot of work to do to convince the new Secretary that a non-motorized safety performance measures is a critical step to “offering the public safe transportation choices” as “a priority at the Department.”
