Foxx Offers Positive But Vague Support for Bike Projects

Congratulations, Mr. Foxx.

Now that Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx has been confirmed, its time for us to ask some specific questions about his thoughts on bicycling. Luckily for us, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) has already asked them.

When a nominee testifies at a Senate confirmation hearing, there is rarely enough time for Senators to ask all their question, so they submit written questions and the nominee sends back written answers. Sen. Schatz asked three questions — one on Complete Streets, one on bike design standards and one on performance measures.

The good news: His answers were positive. The bad news: The answers are so vague — especially the one on performance measures — it tells me we have a lot of work to do to convince the new Secretary that a non-motorized safety performance measures is a critical step to “offering the public safe transportation choices” as “a priority at the Department.”

You can read all of Foxx’s answers here.
