In Memoriam: Lorna Green

It is with great sadness that the League informs our community of the passing of Lorna Green. For the better part of two decades, Lorna was the League’s Director of Operations but her role was better reflected by her self-proclaimed title as the League’s “jack of all trades.” Lorna was the person who kept the League rolling day in and day out. She was the first person who would greet you in the office every morning and was often the last person you’d see as you left wishing you a goodnight. Lorna always had time to chat and always asked about your family. She was the premier baker of the office and never passed up an opportunity to bake brownies, rum cake, or another dessert to help celebrate a birthday or other happy occasion. Did you have a question about the latest computer specifications? Lorna had you covered and could find you an amazing deal.

Lorna was also the first person you saw at the National Bike Summit. She would command the check-in table from the start of the Summit to the very end, always with a smile and a friendly greeting. As a DC native, she had keen insights into the city’s history, events, transportation corridors, schools, neighborhoods, parks, people, and more. She saw so many changes in her city over the years and was always quick with a memory or fact about DC over the years. Her deep knowledge of history extended into the world of science fiction as Lorna was an avid Trekkie who loved not only the storytelling made possible by sci-fi, but also could tell you all about the technical advances in filmmaking behind the scenes. If you hadn’t seen the latest Star Wars show/Avengers movie/Trek but expressed interest, you wouldn’t be surprised to find the DVDs on your chair the next day.

Lorna had been looking forward to retirement and spending more time with her son Christopher, and her months-old granddaughter Rose, whom she was visiting at the time of her passing. 

Lorna was a mother, grandmother, community activist, teacher, and friend. Lorna’s abrupt departure from this world leaves us heavy-hearted; we greatly mourn her loss.
