“As these businesses make bicycling a safe and convenient option for transportation and recreation they play a vital role in transforming our nation into a safer, healthier and more sustainable place to live and work,” said Alex Doty, League Executive Director. “We congratulate and thank this new round of businesses for leading the way in creating a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone.”

Platinum Bicycle Friendly University, the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities is also a returning Platinum BFB. According to Steve Sanders, Alternative Transportation Manager, “Through our supportive services offered at the Bike Center to the financial rewards that can be earned by our employees, we have built an abiding bicycling culture on campus. Employees who bicycle are valued, and our team activities have increased camaraderie and cohesion in multiple units of the University. The University is a better place because of our support for all aspects of bicycling.” The University also sponsors Open Streets events and subsidizes bikeshare membership.

First time applicant and new Silver BFB, Houston TX’s Energy Corridor District stood out for their commitment to community involvement. Like the University of Minnesota, this awardee also sponsors Open Streets events. “The event attracted thousands of Houstonians on a Sunday afternoon, who watched a mile-long stretch of suburban roadway come alive with cyclists and pedestrians.” They are also active in encouraging other local businesses to become more bicycle friendly and to apply for BFB status.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, is a new Silver BFB. According to Lindsey Swann, Wellness Program Manager, “St. Jude values its bicycle-friendly initiatives as important to employee recruitment and retention. It encourages healthy living; mental and physical wellness; employee morale; stress-relief and productivity. Its consistently successful participation in Bike to Work Day, its groups rides, bicycle-related wellness programs and company bike share not only encourage employee health but prompt engagement with networks in the city of Memphis and builds community among employees.

John Hancock’s Boston, MA, office was awarded as a new Silver BFB. They offer employees showers, lockers, and discounted bikeshare membership. Per Christina Wiskow, Director, Global Wellness, “The most positive outcome is the health and wellness of John Hancock employees. Studies on reduced medical claims, absenteeism, etc. are important to John Hancock’s business.”

Thrivent Financial in Appleton, WI, is also a new Silver BFB. The company has been an active participant in the National Bike Challenge since its inception in 2011. This year, Thrivent continues its role as one of the sponsors of the Challenge.  Thrivent’s Christine Cremer said, “Our employee advocacy groups include a Wellness Team and Green Team whose Commuting sub-team concentrates on alternative means of transportation. Together these groups have made great strides in creating awareness of the benefits and joy that bicycling brings to our employees and members alike.”
