Biggest Round Ever: Bicycle Friendly Businesses Announced

Today, the League of American Bicyclists announced 150 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Businesses (BFB) in 39 states and the District of Columbia.

The largest group of awardees in the program’s history, this latest round grows the ranks of BFBs to more than 800 businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies in 46 states and the District of Columbia.

“We know that bicycling can add tremendous value to businesses in employee health and wellness, economic savings and more,” said Andy Clarke, League President. “The growing popularity of the BFB program is a testament to the increasing number of forward-thinking business leaders across the United States. We applaud today’s new awardees.”

Some of the awardees this round include…

Eli Lilly Co., a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Indianapolis, moved from Bronze to Silver this round, showing its commitment to bicycling by adding a new fleet of bikes for free use by employees.

Lilly’s commitment to cycling has continued to grow with the recent addition of an indoor bike hub for commuters and a fleet of city bikes for free use by employees. These efforts promote cycling, align with our corporate focus on wellness and our desire to be environmentally friendly. We are thrilled to be recognized at the Silver level this year by the League of American Bicyclists, but we have our sights on gold and ultimately beyond to foster a cycling culture at Lilly and in the community. –– Tim Wozniak, chair of the Lilly Cycling Club

Zipcar Boston received a new Bronze-level award this round.

Zipcar Boston is thrilled to receive this year’s Bronze-Level Bicycle Friendly Business Award. Since inception, Zipcar’s mission has remained the same — to enable simple and responsible urban living — through not only removing personally owned vehicles from congested city streets, but encouraging our members to use a variety of transit options including riding a bicycle. To further promote biking as a complement to car sharing and a great eco-friendly transportation option, Zipcar has continued to support bicycling through sponsoring the Green Line Velo bike team, regularly partnering with the Pan-Mass Challenge, attending the City’s “Bike Friday’s” at City Hall as well as working closely with MassBike on a variety of events and initiatives. —  Lisa Feldman, General Manager

Alta Bicycle Share, which manages bike share systems throughout North America, is a new Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Business.

At Alta Bicycle Share, we work hard to transform and improve communities through bike sharing. We also work hard to make sure our own employees are supported to use bikes and alternative transportation every day as they come to work. We’re thrilled to get this award on behalf of those employees. — Mia Birk, Vice President of Alta Bicycle Share

Fort Worth Bike Sharing in Texas, which received a Silver-level award.

We’re honored to be designated a Silver Bike Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists. Our staff works to promote cycling as transportation every day, and it starts within our office.  Whether bike-commuting to work or taking a bicycle out to lunch or a meeting, we make it a priority to lead by example and to foster a bike friendly work environment. — Kristen Camareno, Executive Director
