Getting to know Congressional Candidates: The Philadelphia Area

The Congress elected this November will be tasked with writing the next transportation bill. That is why this year the League is working with state and local advocacy organizations to send candidate questionnaires to candidates for open congressional seats. Both the League and the Philadelphia Bicycle Coalition are 501 (c)3 non-profits we do not endorse candidates.

We worked with the Philadelphia Bicycle Coalition to reach out to Candidates in the three open districts in their region- and contacted candidates multiple times- to learn their opinions on the issues.  We didn’t hear back from everyone, but here are the results we did get. If we get responses from the other candidate we will share them as soon as we can.

Here are the results

District 4

D

Madeleine Dean

R

Dan David

District 5

D

Mary Gay Scanlon* (completed survey)

R

Pearl Kim* (no response)

District 6

D

Chrissy Houlahan

R

Greg McCauley

*The League thanks Candidate Scanlon for responding to the survey. We reached out to Candidate Kim eight times via phone and email but did not receive a completed survey. Our lawyer advised us not to publish results if only one candidate responded.

Wondering whose district you are in? Here is a visual map from PhillyVoice on Congressional districts in the Philadelphia region.

We focused on open seats — those races where the current Congress member is retiring or running for a different office — because we believe this is an opportunity to educate the candidate about issues that affect bicyclists, as well as share with their constituents where they stand on these issues.

As we get more results we will post them here and alert our members in their districts.
