Applications For Our 2023 Community Spark Grants Are Now Open

In 2022, the League challenged advocates to reimagine how they can reclaim and transform streets to create more Bicycle Friendly Communities and awarded 11 organizations $1,500 each towards their innovative bike-related projects. This year, the Community Spark Grant program will expand its reach, awarding 18 grants of $1,500 each to organizations seeking to improve their communities through biking.

To be eligible to apply, organizations must be based in the United States and be a non-profit (501c3, 501c4 and 501c6) and/or a public or government agency/organization. Other types of organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Generous support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will fund 8 awards, as part of the CDC’s Active People, Healthy NationSM Initiative, which is working to help 27 million Americans become more physically active by 2027. Separately, generous support from General Motors will fund 10 additional awards.

Do you have a project that would increase opportunities for healthy and active ways to get around but need the funding to get it off the ground? We are especially looking for projects with new perspectives that focus on issues faced by people from ethnic or racial minority groups and include authentic engagement with the community. Organizations and partnerships led by or primarily serving people from ethnic or racial minority groups are encouraged to apply!

The 2022 Community Spark Grants included projects such as a bike education program that assists physicians in promoting the health benefits of bicycling to their senior patients and an open streets event featuring temporary pedestrian crosswalks, bike lanes and street art to help city officials and residents visualize how streets can be used in a way that prioritizes families and children. These projects are examples of how organizations are teaming up with the League to inspire more Americans to view the bicycle as a simple solution and everyday tool to address individuals’ and communities’ wellbeing – now it’s your chance!

We hope this seed funding can be the spark that puts your next idea into action. The deadline to apply for a Community Spark Grant is April 7, 2023, at 11:59 pm PT. Winners will be announced during Bike Month in May. For more information about the grant, check out the application page below. We look forward to receiving your application!
