Sometimes organizational change is barely seen; subtle tweaks to existing programs or processes. At other times, organizations must embrace more dramatic shifts in approach, in velocity, in culture, signaling important changes to all who are affected by the organization and its mission. In 2013, when we embarked on our strategic planning process, we were clear about our vision and the wide-spread benefits of bicycling — but needed to define a strong, clear leadership role for the League. Since 1880, the League has been the leader in bicycling advocacy. To meet our mission, we know it’s time for us to take bold steps — and help to shift the paradigm of the bicycle movement itself.
The League’s Board of Directors serves a critical role in guiding the organization to a sustainable and vibrant future. The Board is made up of both board-appointed and member-elected seats — and you elected three candidates to fill the available seats.
Join us in congratulating John Siemiatkoski, board chair, and Matt Moore, who will continue their tenure on the board, both winning re-election, and Jennifer Laurita, who will join the board for the first time, rounding out the three available seats.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me and supported my election,” Laurita said. “I am extremely honored to be able to serve on the Board and am eagerly looking forward to working with the other Board members, League staff, and members to fulfill the League’s mission of engaging all communities to build a bicycle friendly America.”

We are terribly sad to learn of the passing of Jim Oberstar — our extended League family expresses deepest condolences to Jim’s family and enormous gratitude for his extraordinary life and service. Jim Oberstar has been a friend, adviser and mentor to the entire bicycling community…
Bicycling brings people together. When more people ride, individual lives are better; communities are stronger and better connected; our nation is healthier, happier and environmentally and economically stronger. After a day and a half of discussing, brainstorming, and parsing, these simple and powerful beliefs emerged from the League Board of Directors’ strategic planning retreat.

Kenneth Podziba is the president and CEO of Bike New York, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing free bike education classes for kids and adults throughout New York City; last year, his organization taught 15,000 students how to ride safely and confidently.
