Educating Drivers on Sharing the Road: What Works and How to Make it Happen

June 10 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Bicycle Friendly Driver (BFD) is a motorist-focused training program designed to educate drivers on how and why bicyclists navigate roadways the way they do, with the goal of fostering mutual understanding and safer streets for all users. In this session, we’ll hear from two communities where the BFD training is being actively implemented and making an impact.  The League will also announce the launch of its new series of videos aimed specifically at educating truck drivers on sharing the road with bicyclists. The videos cover key topics such as common crashes, bike infrastructure, and truck driver awareness of cyclists. They are available in English and Spanish. Please join us!

Speakers include:

  • Jamie Gaskill, Colorado State University (CSU): At CSU, BFD training is being delivered to two groups of campus fleet vehicle drivers as part of professional development programming. Ms. Gaskill — the original creator of the BFD curriculum — worked with partners at the University to adapt the program to meet the specific needs of a university campus. Their work is improving driver-bicyclist interactions on the roadways of CSU and throughout Fort Collins, a Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly University and Community.
  • Oliver Sendall, BikeWalkNC: Representing this statewide advocacy organization, Oliver will share how BikeWalkNC has adapted the BFD curriculum to create the NC Friendly Driver Program, a successful North Carolina focused driver training program to educate new young drivers, law enforcement professionals, bus drivers, and others on the importance of sharing the road responsibly.
