Bicycle Friendly CommunitiesColorado Springs, CO | Silver Level Community Highlights: Since passing a Complete Streets ordinance in 2005 that includes bicycling in all major transportation projects, Colorado Springs has garnered national attention and recognition on several ‘road diet’ projects. Additionally, Colorado Springs has expanded their bike network to include 54 miles of bike lanes, with a 10 percent increase in 2007 alone, and an impressive 104 miles of concrete, asphalt, or groomed natural surface trails within the City’s urban trails system. Funding for these projects is aided by a voter approved 1/10th of a cent sales tax for trails, open space and parks. Bolstered further by donations and funding through other grants and partner contributions, a total of $65.3 million has been generated through the TOPS tax, positively impacting more than 100 open spaces, parks and trails. Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Colorado Springs made several major new investments include the addition of 14 new miles of bicycle lanes as well as substantial resurfacing and signage improvements to the Flagship Pikes Peak Greenway. The community also made great efforts to bolster their Bike to Work Day and Bike Month activities.
