Bicycle Friendly Communities

Arcata, CA | Bronze Level

Community Highlights: More than 5 percent of all commuting trips made in Arcata are made by bike, according to the 2000 census data – more than 13 times the national average. The city is also home to the Arcata Bike Library, a unique program that makes refurbished bikes available to anyone for a $20 deposit.  Currently the city has bike lanes or paved shoulders on 95 percent of its arterial streets and 12 miles of bike lanes. All traffic lights are equipped with bicycle sensitive activation.

Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: Arcata recently received a grant from CalTrans to support the bicycle lending library and to further bicycle infrastructure in the city. In the following year, look for more "share the road" stenciling arrows on arterials and two bicycle boulevards.
