FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 17, 2005 HUTCHISON AND KERRY RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION FROM AMERICA'S BICYCLISTSWashingon, DC -- During the 2005 National Bike Summit, the League of American Bicyclists presented Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) with the National Bicycle Leadership Award for her commitment to our nation’s bicyclists and for her support of bicycling in her home state of Texas. Senator Hutchison is the Co-Chair of the Senate Bike Caucus, a bipartisan group of Senators helping to create a bicycle-friendly America. Senator John Kerry (D-MA), an avid bicyclist, received the National Bicycle Advocacy Award later in the evening for his dedication to cycling. His promotion of bicycling throughout his public career has helped raise awareness of bicycling as a sport, a healthy and fun physical activity, and a viable mode of transportation. Since 2001, the National Bike Summit® has brought together thousands of bicyclists; industry leaders; transportation, health and environmental professionals; and local, state and federal officials; all of whom are concerned with the future of bicycling. Its relevance and success have produced numerous educational, programming and policy success stories at all levels of government. Each year, as Summit participation grows, so do the benefits and outcomes. The League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation, and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. The League represents the interests of 57 million American cyclists, including its 300,000 members and affiliates.
