Safe Cycling (Road I) at REI - Schaumburg

Description: REI Schaumburg will host The League of American Bicyclists Adult Safe Cycling Course (Road I) .

Experience the enjoyment of bicycling for fun and exercise. Preserve the environment and save money by running errands by bike rather than by car. Whether you are a beginning cyclist, an experienced cyclist, or are returning to cycling after years away from it, you will find something useful for you in the Safe Cycling course.

The course will help you refine and refresh your cycling skills; to ride your bike confidently and safely for transportation, fitness and recreation, in traffic and on trails. Learn to be visible and predictable, to ride between and through intersections, to ride in groups, and to avoid crashes. It covers bicycle safety checks, fixing flats, essential on-bike handling skills, traffic cycling skills, and crash avoidance techniques. A student manual is included.

The course consists of 3 classes.

1. Getting On A Bike and Keeping It Running - Tuesday, June 3, 7 to 9pm

2. Traffic Rules and Safety - Tuesday, June 10, 7 to 9 pm

3. Essential Bike Handling Skills, Emergency Maneuvers, and Traffic Cycling - Saturday, June 14, 10am-2pm

Successful completion of all three classes earns a Certificate of Completion for the League of American Bicyclists Road 1 Course.

Classes 1 and 2 will be held in the REI - Schaumburg classroom. Bikes are not required for either one.

Class 3 will be held entirely outside, on bikes, at a location to be announced later. The class involves parking lot drills and a ride on local roads. Participants must bring their own bikes and helmets for class #3.

Pricing for the course is:

• Standard Rate - $60.00 - includes The League Guide to Safe and Enjoyable Cycling

• Club Rate - $50.00 - includes The League Guide to Safe and Enjoyable Cycling.

  The Club Rate is available to members of any bicycle club or bicycle advocacy group, such as The League of American Bicyclists, League of Illinois Bicyclists, or The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation.

• Family Rate - $40/ family member.

  The Family Rate is available to 2 or more members of the same family. Includes one copy of The League Guide to Safe and Enjoyable Cycling to share.
